1. Engagement: The Worship Attendance Index

Description

Purpose

This index measures the congregation's worship attendance relative to its total membership, controlling for the realistic expectation that a committed member does not attend every single week. A score of 1.0 or higher indicates that, on average, your members are attending worship at or above the national benchmark for a healthy church.

To track whether the congregation is growing its level of consistent engagement (faithfulness) in weekly worship services, not just its total number of members. It serves as an early indicator of member health and commitment.

Formula: Worship Attendance Index

The formula uses an Expected Attendance Factor (EAF), which represents the assumed average weekly attendance frequency for a truly engaged member. Based on general U.S. church statistics, a conservative, yet healthy, expectation for an active member is to attend at least twice a month.

WAI=Total Church Membership×Expected Attendance Factor (EAF)Avg. Weekly Worship Attendance

Control Factor and Example:

  • Expected Attendance Factor (EAF): 0.50 (Twice a month, or 50% of weeks).
  • Example: If your church has a Total Membership of 200 and your Average Weekly Attendance is 100, the calculation is:
    WAI=200×0.50100=100100=1.00
    • Interpretation: A 1.00 means your attendance perfectly matches the 50% expected engagement rate. A value of 1.10 means you are exceeding the benchmark, and 0.90 means you are below it.

2. Stewardship: The Giving Growth Index

Description

Purpose

This two-part index measures the per-member financial contribution as a snapshot of current giving health (Part A) and the year-over-year change in that metric (Part B). Focusing on per-member giving normalizes the data to account for changes in membership size.

To ensure that giving is growing at a sustainable rate that outpaces both inflation and membership decline/stagnation. This measures the health of the financial commitment of the membership.

Formula: Giving Growth Index

The most effective way to measure growth is by comparing the current period's performance to a previous period.

GGI=Part A (Current Health)×50%+Part B (Growth Trend)×50%

Part A: Annual Per-Member Giving (Current Health)

Part A=Total Church MembershipTotal Annual Giving (Excl. Special Campaigns)

Part B: Per-Member Giving Growth Rate (Growth Trend)

Part B=Previous Year’s Per-Member GivingCurrent Year’s Per-Member Giving−Previous Year’s Per-Member Giving

  • Interpretation: Part B is a percentage (e.g., 0.05 for 5% growth). You can weigh this metric based on your church’s financial goals. A higher weighting on Part B prioritizes growth and trend over the raw total.

3. Seek: The Learning Focus Index

Description

Purpose

This weighted index measures the church’s success in attracting newcomers (Visitors), retaining them (New Members), and encouraging active spiritual formation (Bible Study/Small Group participation).

To ensure the church is actively reaching out to and successfully incorporating new people into the fellowship, measuring the "front door" of the church.

Formula: Learning Focus Index

To create a single index, each component is calculated as a rate (ratio to membership) and weighted.

OFI=(RateA×WA)+(RateB×WB)+(RateC×WC)

Component

Weight (W)

Calculation

A. Spiritual Formation

50%

RateA=Avg. Weekly Worship AttendanceAvg. Weekly Adult Bible Study Attendees

B. New Incorporation

RateB=Total Church MembershipTotal New Members in the last 12 months

C. Initial Engagement

20%

RateC=Avg. Weekly Worship AttendanceTotal Annual Unique Visitor Units (Families/Individuals)

  • Interpretation: A target range should be set for the total Index (e.g., 0.25−0.40), which represents the percentage of your church (or its attendance) that is actively involved in seeking/forming activities.

4. Live: The Spiritual Growth and Discipleship Index

Description

Purpose

This weighted index measures the internal spiritual growth and discipleship of the congregation by tracking participation in key programs. The weighting is adjusted to align with your focus on attracting and retaining young families.

To ensure that internal programs are effectively fostering spiritual maturity across all demographics, with specific attention to the vitality of family-focused ministries.

Formula: Spiritual Growth and Discipleship Index

The formula separates programs that align with your strategic focus (young families) from general discipleship activities (small groups).

SGDI=(RateA×WA)+(RateB×WB)

Component

Weight (W)

Calculation

A. Young Family Program Participation

B. General Discipleship Participation

40%

RateB=Total Church MembershipTotal Individuals Participating in Small Groups, Men’s, Women’s, Senior Programs

  • Normalization Note: Rate A is normalized to the target demographic (members with children/youth) to give a truer measure of success in engaging that group. Rate B is normalized to the total membership for a broad discipleship measure.

5. Share: The Community Outreach and Witness Index

Description

Purpose

This weighted index measures the church’s active involvement and success in engaging the surrounding, non-member community through external-facing programs and events. It focuses on the Reach into the community and the Commitment to provide opportunities.

To track whether the church's programs and ministries are fulfilling the Great Commission (witnessing/sharing) and growing their impact on the local area.

Formula: Community Outreach and Witness Index

This index measures the church's Reach (Non-Members Served) and its Commitment (Events Held).

COWI=(RateA×WA)+(RateB×WB)

Component

Weight (W)

Calculation

A. External Reach

70%

RateA=Total Church MembershipTotal Unique Non-Members Served Annually

B. Commitment to External Events

30%

RateB=Target Number of Events (e.g., 12 events per year)Number of External-Facing Events (e.g., Harvest Festival, Grief Share, Food Program)

  • Unique Non-Members Served: This is the critical number. It tracks how many different people from the community were impacted by your programs (e.g., different families using the food bank, different attendees at Grief Share who are not members).

Target Number of Events: Setting a numerical goal for external-facing events (e.g., one per month or 12 per year) allows you to measure your church’s programmatic commitment. If you host 15, your rate is 15/12=1.25.
